A habit cough is a repetitive cough that occurs in the absence of any underlying disease. Habit cough (also called psychogenic cough, somatic cough syndrome or tic cough) most frequently affects school age children, usually those in later primary school or early high school, and boys and girls are equally affected. Note. May be used as an additional code to identify functional activity associated with a carcinoid tumor. Numerous conditions can cause hoarseness, ranging from simple inflammatory processes to more serious systemic, neurologic, or cancerous conditions involving the larynx.
